Killian

Six days.

I’ve been in Salem for six days.

Six days, and if I don’t do something about this crackling chemistry between us, I’m going to explode.

I know Maddie can sense it. While we’re watching television together, while she’s cooking up supper, while we settle down to work on her monster cat puzzle… there’s no way she can’t feel it. It’s as obvious as her neon green hair, even if I have enough tact not to point that out.

It’s all I can think about, too. Once she got past the idea that I wasn’t going anywhere—that I really can’t—Maddie let down her guard enough for me to get to know the woman she really is when she isn’t in a rush or being bossed around by a half-blood leprechaun. The more I learn about her, the more I like. The closer we get, the more I realize that I can’t leave until I have this woman at least once.

Too bad that the chances of that happening are as good as the Yankees finally showing the Red Sox up anytime this decade. Good for my Sox. All around shite for poor Killian.

This is more than my regular run of bad luck, too. There is definitely something else at play here. Pity that I can’t do anything about it. Now that I’m looking at it from Maddie’s point of view, I realize how terrible this has all been for her. And it’s all my fault. Not the best way to convince a human I’m worth a tumble in her bed.

I mean, first, she had a stranger showing up out of the blue, demanding room and board all because she had the misfortune to pick up a lost coin. She wanted to send me away, but I went ahead and shocked her by shrinking down to my leprechaun size, abruptly introducing her to the idea that magic exists in her orderly little world, before guilt tripping her into letting me stay.

And now I’m afraid I’ve blown any chance I could’ve had with her because I was so damn insistent on getting my foot in the door so that I could get my amulet back. One thing I discovered about Maddie? Not a fan of pushy fellas.

I really wanted to blame my bad luck for it. I almost wish I could—except, apart from the whole not being able to grant wishes thing, I haven’t had one unlucky thing happen to me since I started staying with Maddie.

For the first few days, I was wary of disaster striking. In my experience, if it’s not a couple small things going wrong for me, it’s because the magic is saving up for a doozy. I’m super careful when I’m working on Maddie’s puzzle, but it never falls. When we’re baking together in the kitchen—okay, when she’s baking, and I’m keeping her company—I almost expect the stove to blow up. Nothing.

Almost a week later and I still have my left shoe.

It’s all so weird, just like Maddie said. As a half-blood leprechaun, I’m used to weird—but I’m used to a certain kind of it.
